Concerned Citizens Demand Transparency on Banka Wajaale Land Deal

As concerned citizens of Somaliland residing in North America, we welcome any initiative that contributes to the development of the Wajaale plains (Banka Wajaale) and strengthens Somaliland’s food security. However, the recently proposed  Pharo Venture land deal has raised serious concerns and unanswered questions.

We believe that public land is a public trust, and decisions of this magnitude must be handled with full transparency, accountability, and the consent of the people.

Key Questions That Remain Unanswered

  • What is the exact size and location of the proposed lease area?

  • What are the terms and conditions of the lease agreement?

  • What is the duration of the lease—25 years? If so, is it extendable?

  • What specific crops are planned for cultivation?

  • Who are the actual investors behind this project, beyond Pharo?

  • Is the Africa Food Security Company involved, and if so, why—given its poor performance record in parts of West Africa?

  • Has there been any genuine consultation with local communities?

Our Strong Recommendations to All

To ensure that this project truly serves the interests of the people of Somaliland, we call for:

Full transparency and public disclosure regarding the project’s scope, investors, and lease terms.
Independent assessments of long-term social, economic, and environmental impacts.
Meaningful community consultation and consent before any commitments are finalized

“Transparency is not optional—it is essential. Transparency builds trust, ensures
accountability, and aligns national development with the interests of the people. Secrecy,
on the other hand, fosters confusion, suspicion, and conflict.”

We strongly urge all relevant stakeholders, including government officials, investors, and local leaders, to prioritize openness, accountability, and responsible governance in this process.
